Spurred Into Making
spurred into making thousands of parts,
durable identical parts,
yes, reliable, it was
though so intricate to be near unworkability,
compounding
founder's sweat with compositor's dexterity:
save one's own heart, one's own lungs,
the waves, and horses hooves
an emblem of something else
apt to turn up early;
about that, your eye will tell you nothing
save habits of inadequate patience...
in 1904 the world's most extensive notion
delivers its experience in discrete packets:
at the mercy of a single multiple
indiscretion,
tracking one misprinted chrysalis,
