Pop Song Philosopher--Bieber?

So, as a friend tells me that Justin Bieber is popular among tweens (girls and boys?) I thought I'd give it a go.

I ask the magic Googles for a "most popular tune" and it gave me this one:

One Time

Aye aye aye aye aye aye aye aye

Me plus you (I'ma tell you one time) [x3]

When I met you girl my heart went knock knock
Now them butterflies in my stomach wont stop stop
And even though its a struggle love is all we got
So we gon' keep keep climbin' till the mountain top

Your world is my world
And my fight is your fight
My breath is your breath
And your heart (and now I've got my)

Chorus:
One love
My one heart
My one life for sure
Lemme tell you one time
(girl I love, girl I love you)
I'ma tell you one time
(girl I love, girl I love you)
And I'ma be your one guy
You'll be my number one girl
Always makin time for you
I'ma tell you one time
(girl I love, girl I love you)
I'ma tell you one time
(girl I love, girl I love you)

You look so deep
You know that it humbles me,
Your by my side and them troubles them don't trouble me
Many have called but the chosen Is you
Whatever you want shawty I'll give it to you

Shawty right there
She's got everything I need
and I'm gon' tell her one time (one time)
Give you everything you need
Down to my last dime
She makes me happy
I know where I'll be
Right by your side cause
She is the one (girl your my)

I honestly am stumped here--really...other than wondering what in the world "shawty" means and how I'm supposed to understand the thinking of a lyricist who writes "them troubles them don't trouble me".

And I guess wonder why, in a song that is constantly repetitive, he claims to be telling her "one time"...

There doesn't seem to be much "psychology" here or philosophy...is there?

I'm also stumped... one time, one time, one time.

  2. yeah, have you heard it...it's a little creepy.

I know it's a kind of tween love song but even that is really kind of gross.

My favorite part as I may have hinted in the post is this:

    You look so deep
You know that it humbles me,
Your by my side and them troubles them don't trouble me
Many have called but the chosen Is you
Whatever you want shawty I'll give it to you

She LOOKS deep--and so this is framed in appearance. But this humbles him, how I'm not sure. Unless this simply means she's "hot". And I do like the quasi-religious diction here--"called" and "chosen". Shawty!

Hard to imagine a religious father's "promised" daughter deepening this guys humility.

  3. I think she looks "deep" in the sense that she looks deep into young Justin's soul. She knows him better than he knows his boyish self, and that's what humbles him. This emasculates him, so he quickly comes back with a "shawty" reference at the end of the verse to reassert his "place" in their relationship. It's a ping pong match, and Justin has been kind enough to let us watch.

"Shawty" is a variant of "shorty", which is simply one's girlfriend.

  4. Well played, Anonymous commenter! I will give it some more thought as your explication allows me room to interpret within the scene of the song's idea of relationship. Gracias!
